What’s wrong with the gynecologist ?

28 08 2009

“What’s wrong with male gynecologist ?” my wife asked me.

“ It’s all wrong.” I said.

Perhaps, she didn’t notice how the gynecologist staring at her while he walked through the waiting room, but I did and it was annoying me.

“First, I have to let him stick his finger into your vagina, second I have to pay him expensive for that.”

Sticking finger to my wife’s vagina to detect any infection ?  It sounds no good. I believe it’s not only sticking….but twisting around back and forth. If it had to be that way, I prefer to let a woman doing it. Although the gynecologist knew my anxiety, he didn’t recommend me a female gynecologist, as I know there is a female gynecologist working at the same hospital. But the weird thing is the gynecologist became intimidating when he said that I was refusing vaginal examination on my wife, since I wasn’t refusing but only felt uncomfortable with male gynecologist doing it. After all, it’s not an emergency situation, just a pre-pregnancy examination, so I still have plenty of time to find female gynecologist.

It was the situation when someone you trust (by his/her profession) playing you around. A quick back flash stroke my head, taking me back to 3 years ago when I was suffering from sediment in my right kidney. The urologist I met suggesting surgery to remove the sediment, and assured me that there was no other way to save me from the pain. The diagnose and the recommendation were built up from x-ray photos of my kidney.

Well, I had to prepare the budget first, right ? An administrative officer handed me the details of the procedure cost. OMG ! The surgery would cost me 10 million rupiah, and half of it would go to the urologist’s pocket. Driven by the fact that I didn’t have the money, I went for second opinion. A friend of mine recommended me a general practitioner. When I showed him he x-ray photos told him all what the urologist said, he laughed.

“ You don’t need surgery, it’s a small sediment and it is on the way to the bladder, when it reaches your bladder, it won’t cause you pain anymore. Once it in the bladder, it will go out naturally along with your urine. Don’t worry, I will write you prescription for reducing the pain, curing the possible infection and stimulating your bladder. Don’t forget to drink water 20 glasses a day.”

Obviously the urologist has played me around. He left me with no choice and turned out that it’s not necessary. And the general practitioner was right, not later than 5 days the sediment plugged out when I was urinating. Since that moment I never trust any doctor that leave me with no choice, I always seek for second opinion if a doctor say to me: ‘There is no other way’.

“I want you to be examined by female gynecologist.” I said to my wife.

“Male gynecologist always better than female gynecologist. Everybody knows.” She replied.

“Well, that is female gynecologist’s problem, not ours ! This is a pre-pregnancy examination, I only let female gynecologist touching around your genital and no male gynecologist before you really get pregnant.”

This is another issue, why people think that male gynecologist is always better than female one. Are we lack of good female gynecologist? It has to be a good female gynecologist somewhere.

I decided to be a smart patient. When I’m dealing with any health issue, I always gather sufficient information about it before I go to any doctor. At least I can give impression to the doctor that I’m a well informed patient. I should educate myself, as I feel there is no doctor trying to educate the patient anymore. The most important thing is that I need to be comfortable with the treatment I choose. I never hesitate to have another option or second opinion.
